Dear Editor:
I have concerns about underage and excessive
drinking in our community. Alcohol is the number one drug used by
young people today, according to a new report by the National Academy of
Sciences. I believe (Your Local College) officials share this concern
and invest heavily in programs designed to reduce alcohol problems on
campus, as they should. Why is it then that (Your Local College)'s
televised (football/basketball/etc.) games include beer commercials? I
believe it is wrong for schools to take ad money from beer companies, which
market beer to youth. It undermines the prevention messages college
officials deliver to students. College administrators shouldn't be
selling out young people, including their students, to commercial interests
whose products undermine the health and well-being of their campus and
impose enormous costs. It's time for (Your Local College) to stop
allowing beer advertisements to run during its games.
Sincerely,
Your Name
