Last summer, consumers faced food-poisoning outbreaks and massive meat recalls. This week, they got news of a startling new case of mad cow disease in North America. And industry-driven law suits have weakened USDA’s ability to ensure the safety of the meat supply.
Consumers want safer meat and the industry certainly needs help from Congress before the industry’s lawyers and lobbyists send it over a cliff.
Kevin’s Law contains both good science and good old common sense which are urgently needed to restore consumers’ faith in our meat-safety system. This legislation is supported by scientists, consumers and victims of food-borne illness. In fact, the National Academy of Sciences recently called on Congress to "grant the federal agencies clear authority to establish, implement and enforce food safety criteria, including performance standards." With the leadership of this bi-partisan team of legislators, Congress must pass meaningful pathogen reduction legislation this year. Kevin Kowalcyk’s family--in fact all American families--deserve no less.
