    All produce needs to be rinsed thoroughly under cold, running water—a shower, not a bath. A stream of water helps to rinse off any contaminants. That goes for organic produce, too. Just because it’s grown without pesticides doesn’t mean it’s any less likely to be exposed to microbes. You should also wash citrus fruit and other foods that you’re planning to peel. A knife slicing an unwashed piece of fruit or vegetable can drive surface contaminants into the flesh.   back
