Oncology Group Praised for New Conflict of Interest Policy

Statement of CSPI Integrity in Science Project director Virginia A. Sharpe

April 30, 2003

The tough new conflict of interest policy announced by the American Society of Clinical Oncology is a quantum leap for clinical speciality societies. ASCO has truly stepped up to the plate by issuing uniquely rigorous requirements to prevent conflicts of interest from undermining the conduct of cancer research.

Public confidence in medical research has taken a beating because of financial conflicts of interest. ASCO’s policy not only requires full disclosure, but prohibits a wide range of financial ties. This is exactly the kind of policy that we encourage other medical societies, publishers, and research centers to adopt.

Note: More information about ASCO’s new policy is available at http://asco.org.
