The Centre for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) is a consumer-advocacy organization, with offices in Ottawa and Washington, D.C. that focuses on health and nutrition issues. CSPI is best-known for its advocacy for mandatory nutrition labelling of packaged foods (new rules in force since January 1, 2003), public policy promoting healthy diets and physical activity (see below), educating the public about diet and disease, and promoting integrity in the use of science in the development of public health policy. In working to ensure that science is used in the public interest, a few times each year we notify our members about important public health policy campaigns and urge them to send e-mails or free web-faxes to their Member of Parliament, key Cabinet ministers, government officials, company officials, international bodies, or newspaper editors to urge them to act in the public interest. Our advocacy efforts in Canada are funded by more than 100,000 subscribers to the Canadian edition of our Nutrition Action Healthletter.
