Industry-funded study designed to cast doubt on sugar advice

Statement of CSPI Nutrition Director Bonnie Liebman

This new “study” is a weak and transparent attempt by the food and soda industries to attack sound advice from health authorities to reduce sugar intake. To its credit, the journal also published an editorial outlining the study’s flaws.

If anything, this study is a reminder that it’s not just U.S. health authorities, but also those from Australia, Brazil, England, Germany, Ireland, and the Nordic countries, as well as the World Health Organization, that have urged people to eat less sugar. No industry-funded criticism can weaken that advice.
