Food and Beverage Marketing Survey: Montgomery County Public Schools
In light of the concern over children’s diets and health and marketing’s influence on young people, Montgomery County Council Member and Chair of the Health and Human Services Committee, George Leventhal, requested a study of the extent and nature of food and beverage marketing in Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS).
In April/May 2007, a representative sample of 24 elementary, 6 middle, and 6 high schools (18% of all schools) were assessed. Trained school nurses assessed food and beverage marketing on: posters and signs in the school building; vending machines, including marketing on machine exteriors; and school stores. Trained dietetic interns interviewed school administrators regarding: school sponsorships; curricula; school supplies; fundraising activities; and other marketing.
