Calif. Legislation restricting sale of weight-loss supplements to minors heads to Governor’s desk
Statement of CSPI President Dr. Peter Lurie
The Center for Science in the Public Interest applauds the California state legislature for passing AB-1341, a bill that would ban the sale of over-the-counter diet pills and weight-loss supplements to minors in California. We ask that Governor Gavin Newsom promptly sign it into law.
While these products claim to promote healthy weight loss, the reality is that many are ineffective and often dangerous, especially to children. Because of weak Food and Drug Administration regulation, these products have been repeatedly found to be laced with dangerous chemicals, including banned laxatives and stimulants, which can cause severe harm, even death. This legislation is a critical step toward protecting children from poorly regulated, dangerous supplements and diet pills.
