Trump’s Sloppy Nutrition Rollback is Nothing to Brag About
Statement of CSPI Legislative Affairs Director Laura MacCleery
Vice President Pence is expected to give a speech today outlining the Trump administration’s progress in rolling back federal safeguards, and sharing the agenda for the coming year at the Food and Drug Administration, US Department of Agriculture, and other federal agencies.
While the Trump administration argues that undermining federal standards promotes economic growth, economic analyses don’t support that claim. The administration’s efforts to roll back nutrition safeguards harm not only American families but also businesses. As CSPI documents, the Trump administration’s nutrition policies have been nothing short of chaotic, creating uncertainty for industry and confusion for consumers.
Under Trump, the FDA and USDA have systematically undermined popular measures that provide useful calorie and nutrition information to consumers and healthy food to children. The cost of these programs is vastly outweighed by the billions in health benefits they will provide to the economy by avoiding disease and increasing productivity.
