California advances bill to ban food dyes from schools
Statement of CSPI Regulatory Counsel Jensen Jose
Yesterday, the California Assembly voted to advance the School Food Safety Act (AB-2316), a bill that bans seven harmful dyes, including titanium dioxide, from foods served at California's public schools. The Assembly's action recognizes that there is no place in school foods for dangerous chemicals linked to hyperactivity and other adverse neurobehavioral effects and possible genotoxicity in children. It is now up to the California Senate and the Governor to make this bill law and protect California students.
