New York State passes bill to transform public food purchasing
Statement of CSPI Senior Policy Associate Jessi Silverman
Today, the New York State legislature voted overwhelmingly to pass groundbreaking legislation that removes barriers for municipalities to purchase values-aligned food. The first state-wide legislation of its kind, the Good Food New York bill (S.6955A /A.7264) allows municipalities to prioritize healthy food from vendors who promote community health, worker well-being, local economies, racial equity, animal welfare, sustainability, and transparency, rather than prioritizing the lowest cost.
By signing this bill into law, Governor Hochul would make New York a national leader in the movement for good food purchasing, fostering greater access for New York’s public schools, child and senior care centers, jails, hospitals and other public institutions and feeding programs to ethically-sourced and nutritious food.
