Project 2025 and public health: What's on the line
Gage Skidmore.
A message from CSPI President and Executive Director Dr. Peter Lurie
The next four years won't be easy.
Trust in science will continue to come under attack. Misinformation and disinformation about your nutrition and health will proliferate. And perhaps most importantly, Trump’s second term will place in direct jeopardy the independence and integrity of agencies charged with the safety of our food and health.
Trump alone is enough of a danger. But his alliance with Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. is an unmistakable alarm bell. RFK is perhaps the most prominent spreader of health misinformation on the planet, second to only to Trump himself.
Our food safety system is at a tipping point. Public health measures are under threat. But know that CSPI is fighting for you and your family every day.
Think back to his first term: When Trump tried to install a political operative as USDA’s chief scientist, CSPI led the opposition, and we won.
When Trump first tried to roll back our hard-won progress on healthy school meals for kids, CSPI hauled the administration into federal court. And we won.
When Trump spread misinformation during the COVID-19 pandemic, we testified in Congress and appeared in the media blowing the whistle on misinformation involving hydroxychloroquine, ivermectin, and other fake cures.
When private hucksters like televangelist Jim Bakker or supplement salesman Dr. Joseph Mercola tried to capitalize on the wave of COVID-19 misinformation, we were able to prevail upon the FDA and the Federal Trade Commission to put a stop to their misleading claims.
Trump’s grim Project 2025 playbook has dire implications for nutrition, food safety, and health in general. But we have our own playbook—and the key ingredient is you.
Together, even during the darkest of political times, we have the power to protect food safety regulations, defend against harmful policies and dangerous misinformation, and fight for a safer, more equitable food system for all.
Your support has never been more important to us. And with you at our side, we will never relent. Thank you for all that you do.
As a nonprofit organization that takes no donations from industry or government, CSPI relies on the support of donors to continue our work in securing a safe, nutritious, and transparent food system. Every donation—no matter how small—helps CSPI continue improving food access, removing harmful additives, strengthening food safety, conducting and reviewing research, and reforming food labeling.
Please support CSPI today, and consider contributing monthly. Thank you.
