Science makes Americans healthier

Safe, nutritious food. Effective medicine. Empowered consumer choice. Honest and democratic government. These key building blocks of an American way of life can only be fully realized in a system that respects evidence, transparency, and accountability—a system where leaders believe in science and work for the public interest.

Today, our health is under threat like never before. President Trump, Elon Musk, and their underlings have taken a chainsaw to our public health institutions and are defunding and understaffing the programs that keep us safe—giving corporations free reign over our food and health. And they are perverting the tools of federal power to wage an all-out assault on equity, workers, the environment, and public health—and consequently, risking making people and the planet sicker.

As one of the nation’s leading independent advocacy groups standing up for sound science to inform nutrition, food safety, and health, we are playing a critical role in fighting the Trump administration’s efforts to silence, dismantle, and weaponize our science-based federal health institutions.

What CSPI is doing against public health attacks

  • Working in coalitions and rallying our members and partners to build a movement to oppose harmful policies and actions of the Administration.
  • Curbing the harm effected by Trump and Congress by going to the courts to fight for science and the integrity of public health institutions.
  • Publicly opposing and raising awareness about harmful policies and unfit health agency nominees, including HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and Dr. Mehmet Oz, nominee for Center of Medicare and Medicaid Services.
  • Combating misinformation and disinformation by educating consumers through resources like Nutrition Action and Chemical Cuisine.
  • Advancing state, local, and corporate advocacy to promote science-based policy and putting the Big Food and Beverage industry on the defensive for hurting our health.

CSPI's ongoing advocacy for a healthier America

  • Implementing standardized, mandatory front-of-package nutrition labels that would provide the most important nutrition information on the most visible spot of a product.
  • Pushing the food industry to reduce the amount of sodium and added sugars in our food supply.
  • Requiring all synthetic food dyes in the food supply come with labels warning of their potential impact on children's behavior.
  • Phasing out other poorly tested or harmful additives in our food supply, such as aspartame, titanium dioxide, and propylparaben.
  • Closing the secret GRAS loophole which currently allows unsafe and unchecked additives to enter our food supply.
